10 Great Alternatives To The Tesla Model Y

[ad_1]

The Tesla Model Y is an objectively impressive electric vehicle (EV) with 337 miles of driving range in the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model for a sticker price of $44,990. Per the EPA, these Teslas earn 120 MPGe in the combined cycle, and between an optional third row and 76 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front row, the Model Y can handle family wagon duty.

But Tesla is no longer the only kid on the electric crossover block these days with competitors entering the fray from all the big names. For those shopping this segment, it’s worth spending a minute learning about some alternatives to the Model Y. So, here are 10 solid options – ranked by base model driving range – to have a look at.

Cars ranked by driving range based on manufacturer-supplied, EPA-approved figures for base models. Base model MSRP excludes destination charges and vehicles must be on sale for the 2024 model year.

10 2025 Subaru Solterra

Range: 222-227 Miles

Base Price

$38,495

Battery Capacity (Total)

72.8-kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

104 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

63 Cubic Feet

Effectively a rebadged Toyota bZ4X, the Subaru Solterra is the only EV on this list to come standard with AWD; because Subaru. It also aims at the adventuring crowd with 8.3 inches of ground clearance – the Model Y has 6.8 inches of clearance – and drive modes for dirt, mud, and snow. That added running gear means driving range is 227 miles in base Premium form or 222 miles in the Limited and Touring models.

For the 2025 model year, Subaru has slashed prices of the Solterra by as much as $6,500 without cutting feature availability as it aims to broaden the Solterra’s appeal in an ever-more-tricky EV market. As such, the Subaru EV now starts at $38,495.

9 2025 Toyota bZ4X

Range: 222-252 Miles

Base Price

$37,070

Battery Capacity (Total)

71.4-72.8 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

119 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

57 Cubic Feet

The Solterra’s cousin, the Toyota bZ4X has mirrored the Subaru’s price drop for 2025 but comes in even cheaper with a base MSRP of $37,070 for the new year. That price gets you the bZ4X with the greatest driving range – 252 miles from its 71.4 kWh battery pack and single front motor. Whereas the Subaru is AWD only, the Toyota has two front-wheel drive options, broadening its versatility. After a rocky start to its time on the market in the US, the bZ4X is finally finding its feet, and rumors suggest it may become even more likable when it ditches its alphanumeric name for one that may resonate more with buyers.

8 2025 Nissan Ariya

Range: 216-289 Miles

Base Price

$39,590

Battery Capacity (Usable)

63-87 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

101 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

60 Cubic Feet

Nissan’s practical electric Ariya SUV undercuts the Tesla Model Y by more than $5,000 in base Engage spec, but its 63-kWh battery pack is only good for 216 miles of driving range. However, in Venture+ guise, the Ariya comes with a larger 87-kWh battery and 304 miles of range. This setup is still cheaper than the Tesla at $41,190 to start and, like every 2024 Ariya, comes with a head-up display and Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist driving technology. However, this trim is making way for 2025, and as such, the new MY25 Ariya will only go 289 miles on a charge in the trim with the best range, the FWD Evolve+, with a $44,370 MSRP.

7 2024 Volkswagen ID.4

Range: 206-291 Miles

Base Price

$39,375

Battery Capacity (Usable)

58-77 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

107 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

64 Cubic Feet

Like most Tesla Model Y alternatives, the Volkswagen ID.4 comes standard with a single electric motor, in this case powering the front wheels. This Standard trim has the smallest battery of the ID.4 range at 58 kWh (net capacity), but stepping up to a Pro model for $44,875 – which is more in line with the base Model Y – brings a 77-kWh battery pack and 291 miles of driving range. Heated front seats and self-parking are included across the ID.4 range with upper-level trim lines offering predictive adaptive cruise control (ACC) and massaging front seats.

6 2024 Kia EV6

Range: 218-310 Miles

Base Price

$42,600

Battery Capacity (Total)

58-77.4 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

117 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

50 Cubic Feet

Kia’s racetrack-ready EV6 GT is a looker with neon green trim, big wheels, and a high-performance motor configuration. But it costs $61,600 and only offers 218 miles of driving range. The base Light single-motor model, on the other hand, is $2,390 less than a new Model Y and delivers 232 miles of range. Or, for $45,950, you can step into the Light Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive EV6 that is packing a larger 77.4-kWh battery pack and a 310-mile driving range.

The 2025 Kia EV6 has already been revealed, sporting a larger 63 KWh battery in base form and a range of up to 319 miles, but at the time of writing, pricing was not yet available and the MY25 EV6 is not yet on sale.

5 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Range: 245-318 Miles

Base Price

$42,500

Battery Capacity (Total)

63-84 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

110 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

60 Cubic Feet

Hyundai has earned praise for the styling of its Ioniq 5 hatchback-meets-crossover EV, but the entry-level Standard variant is off the range pace set by the Model Y at just 245 miles. Fortunately, the SE, SEL, and Limited RWD models bump that to 318 miles for a starting price of $46,650 for the 2025 model year. All-wheel drive (AWD), which generally means adding another battery-powered motor with EVs, is available, but drops the driving range on the SEL to 290 miles. Don’t miss the entertaining Ioniq 5 N variant for serious fun.

4 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV

Range: 285-319 Miles

Base Price

$41,900

Battery Capacity

85-kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

108 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

57 Cubic Feet

The recently released Chevy Equinox EV is the only non-Tesla EV on this list to deliver more than 300 miles of driving range from the base model. A model that is about $3,000 less than a Model Y Long Range by the way. Chevy fits every Equinox EV – FWD or AWD – with the same 85-kWh battery pack, which makes it easy to choose a trim line based on features versus driving range. Across the board, a 17.7-inch infotainment interface, a surround-view monitor, and ACC are included.

Tesla once promised to deliver an affordable EV for the people but never quite did. However, the Equinox EV gets close to delivering electrification for the masses.

3 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Range: 230-320 Miles

Base Price

$36,495

Battery Capacity (Usable)

72-91 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

102 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

64 Cubic Feet

For 2025, Ford has expanded the feature availability on the Mustang Mach-E while dropping the price to $36,495. Accompanied by sportier looks, a heat pump for better efficiency in colder climates, and enhanced BlueCruise functionality, it’s now an even more impressive electric crossover than ever. What hasn’t changed substantially, however, is the powertrain, comprising a battery of either 72- or 91 kWh (usable) depending on configuration, giving you up to 320 miles of driving range in the Premium eAWD model. Performance-oriented GT and Rally models drop some efficiency in favor of performance, creating a diverse range of Mustang Mach-E variants and an alluring alternative to the Model Y.

2 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6

Range: 240-342 Miles

Base Price

$37,750

Battery Capacity (Total)

53-77.4 kWh

Combined Fuel Economy

135 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

11 Cubic Feet

We know the Tesla Model Y is a crossover, but if you’re after one of the best EVs on the market and don’t need the space afforded by the crossover, the Ioniq 6 electric sedan is deserving of serious consideration. The only EV here to best the Tesla Model Y in the combined MPGe cycle is the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, resulting in a maximum driving range of 342 miles in SE Long Range RWD trim. Even at a base level, you can expect 240 miles to a charge, with a starting price of more than $7,000 lower than the Model Y.

1 2024 Tesla Model 3

Range: 303-363 Miles

Base Price

$42,490

Battery Capacity

Unknown

Combined Fuel Economy

137 MPGe

Maximum Cargo Space

24 Cubic Feet

What’s the best alternative to the Tesla Model Y when it comes to the driving range of the base model? Another Tesla it turns out. The Tesla Model 3, a sedan based on the same platform, has a better driving range than every other EV here at a base level, with a claimed driving range of 363 miles. It even manages to offer 24 cubic feet of cargo space and of course, for those who want an EV for its speed, the Model 3 Performance can run from 0-60 in under three seconds for $54,900. Impressive.

The caveat here is that the Model 3 was heavily upgraded this year, whereas the Model Y is still getting these updates in a facelift codenamed ‘Juniper’ expected to arrive next year.
